A Demonstration Project: Group Care of Infants and Toddlers. Final Report.
North Carolina Univ., Greensboro.
This research and demonstration project involved the establishment of a demonstration Nursery Center to provide for the daytime care of infants and toddlers in groups and for the evaluation of this experience. A descriptive account is given of the founding of the center and of its operation over a three-year period. Finding housing and suitable staff were two problems encountered. A breakdown of the budget of the center is presented. Other problems encountered and solved were the finding of sufficient outdoor space for play and the acquisition of equipment and supplies. A model was designed for a daily program at the nursery; the main focus of the program was on middle-class families. The model for the program required that the infant's parents be committed to the plan. Also included is a workable plan for the baby's care when he suffers minor illness. A group of children were tested in various areas. It was found that mental, psychomotor, and physical development equaled and in some cases exceeded that of children who did not attend the Center.
