Music in General Education.
Ernst, Karl D., Ed.; Gary, Charles L., Ed.
This book challenges all music educators to return to their original role--to accept as their first responsibility the objective of music for every child. In making this challenge, ideas that could bring about some major revisions in the pattern of music education in this country are presented. These include: (1) General education in music must be planned over the entire 12 or 13 years of a student's school life and should not be limited to the elementary years plus a course or two in junior high school; (2) Every school system needs to develop well-defined goals for music in general education; (2) All music educators must come to recognize the general education nature of school music experiences and to place this aspect of their teaching before other activities; (4) Musical learnings are the responsibility of the entire school; (5) The secondary school music teacher who directs performing groups has a responsibility of organizing his rehearsals in a way that will permit his pupils to improve their attitudes toward music; (6) The relationship between music at school and music at home needs to be strengthened; (7) An extensive in-service training program is needed to re-orient thinking with respect to the objectives of secondary school music experiences; (8) A five-year collegiate program for prospective music educators is necessary to provide the breadth of education needed to meet these challenges adequately; and (9) All future members of the profession of music education should expect to assume their responsibility to enhance the general education of pupils through appropriate experiences in and with music.
