Theatre in High School: Planning, Teaching, Directing.
Motter, Charlotte Kay
A book whose purpose is to provide a single source of reference for the prospective or beginning high school teacher-director and to offer more nearly complete information on the multiple problems confronting him on the job is presented. Sixteen chapters are included. Chapter 1 is designed to help the beginning teacher explain drama to an administration so that theatre arts will be included in the curriculum. Chapter 2 deals with the desirable qualifications of the high school drama teacher. The discussion in Chapter 3 is based upon personal observation, experience, and opinion of the status of drama in high schools. Chapter 4 discusses ways in which the drama teacher can remain on good terms with the school administration and other faculty members, and Chapter 5 discusses the drama teacher's relations with the community at large. Chapter 6 deals with publicity, and Chapter 7 with assembly programs and entertainments. Chapter 8 discusses audience education. Chapters 9 through 12 deal with various aspects of planning. Chapter 13 discusses the difficulties surrounding the selection of plays for high school production. In Chapter 14 is presented a number of suggestions for presenting Shakespeare on the stage. Chapters 15 and 16 discuss the mechanics of good play production. (CK)
