Effects of a Secondary School Humanities Program upon Selected Aspects of Student Personal-Social Adjustment.
Butcofsky, Donald Lamar
This study determines the effect a secondary school humanities program had upon the personal-social adjustment of its students as indicated by response to selected items in a problem checklist. The Mooney Problem Checklist, Form H (1950) was administered to 936 respondents, 454 males and 482 females. Response to all items (330) in the checklist was tabulated by grade level and sex. Among these students, 85.7% felt that the checklist gave a well-rounded picture of their problems. The levels of response were "most troublesome problem", "troublesome problem", and "no problem." The findings did not indicate substantial differences between the experimental and nonexperimental samples, but indicated that there was no constellation of common problems involving a majority of the respondents by sex. Among the 330 items, one went above the 50% level of response for the males, "Not spending enough time in study," There were no items at or above the 50% level for the females. (Author/LS)
