Unit: Cells, Inspection Set, National Trial Print.
Australian Science Education Project, Toorak, Victoria.
This trial version of a unit is the series being produced by the Australian Science Education Project provides instructions for students to prepare a variety of cell types and examine them with microscopes. It also gives some information about the variety and function of cells. The core of the unit, which all students are expected to complete, leads to the development of a model of a generalized cell, ideas of tissue growth and repair, the notion of complementarity of structure and function at the cellular level, and introduces simple concepts of cell chemistry via vital stains. The options provide further experience with the diversity of cells, cellular constituents, the growth of plants from cuttings, and some highly specialized cells: nematocysts and stomatal guard cells. The teachers' guide provides statements of objectives, hints on the introduction of the unit and each section, lists of equipment needed, and a select bibliography. The students' manual includes instructions for each activity, some short reading passages, and a series of questions to stimulate thought. (AL)
