The Impact of Community Colleges. Socio-Economic Survey: Students Entering Post-Secondary Education in British Columbia, Fall 1971.
Dennison, John D.; Tunner, Alex
This report contains a brief description of data collected on the socio-economic background of post-secondary students in British Columbia. A survey of over 11,000 first year college and university students was completed in the fall of 1971. The survey included three parts: a socio-economic survey, an opinion survey, and an achievement test of English and mathematics skills. This information was collected to: (1) determine to what extent the students are representative of the population of the Province; (2) develop a descriptive profile of the community college student; (3) determine what kinds of students, in socio-economic terms, take various programs available at community colleges; and (4) compare community college students with students who enter other types of post-secondary educational institutions. The data is arranged in tables and appended along with the questionnaire. Statistical analysis of these data and other findings on the impact of colleges from the point of view of the student, the educational system and the community, will be reported in future publications.
