Decision flowcharts are efficient and effective training tools for librarians and library employees below the administrative level. In addition, the cost of training programs is reduced by the use of flowcharts. Training staff in the performance of routine procedures is particularly suited to the use o f decision flowcharts. The two types of flowcharts commonly used are the type that documents the conditions that must exist before a decision is reached and the type that documents a sequence of operations and decisions. Simplicity for ease of understanding is a requirement for both. Decision flowcharts are efficient because the trainee can learn complex tasks quickly. And, they are effective because they may be used to increase motivation and to reduce training time. (SJ)
