Basic Understandings of Nonfictional Writings Using the Newspaper as a Supplementary Aid: For Junior High School and Senior High School Grades.

This supplementary aid for the teaching of English by the use of the "Newspaper in the Classroom" utilizes an ungraded approach that may be utilized with students from grades 7 through 12. The emphasis in this guide is in the specific literature area of nonfictional writings. The goals of using this teaching approach are to: (1) stimulate the growth of intellectual curiosity and the capacity for critical thinking; (2) use the newspaper toward strengthening reading and writing skills in the student's growth and development; (3) understand through newspaper and textbook study the growth of mass media and the roles filled by newspapers, radio, and television in society; (4) develop greater appreciation of the cultural offerings of the community, using the press for communications purposes; (5) stimulate imagination and creativity; (6) foster growth in the ability to participate effectively in democratic processes in school and community; (7) contribute to the personal development of the adolescent student; and (8) develop and expand the students' belief in the basic values of democracy and their allegiance to the principles of a democratic society. Lesson guides for the use of newspapers in the area of reading and the area of writing are provided. A partial list of grade level textbooks is given. (DB)
