Environmental Pollution, A Guide to Current Research.
Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Science Information Exchange.
Compiled from data gathered in fiscal years 1969 and 1970 by the Science Information Exchange, Smithsonian Institution, this inventory of more than 4200 federally and non-federally supported environmental research projects represents an attempt to provide a meaningful look at the shape, complexity, and direction of current and recent research. Project resumes are divided into the following subject areas: Ecological Systems; Physical Sciences Applied to Pollution (aerospace-closed environments, instrumentation-analytical methods, materials resisting pollution); Effects of Pollution (birds and land animals, humans, land vegetation and soils, marine animals, marine vegetation); Air and Water Pollution (air, fresh water, salt water); and Causes of Pollution (animal wastes, heat and nuclear radiation, noise, pesticides, herbicides, germicides, waste water, sewage, sludge). Each entry delineates the project name, researcher(s), organization conducting the project, and financial supporting agency. The accompanying abstract describes its purpose and objective, approach, and progress. A subject index to aid in identifying the multiple categories and disciplines of the projects, and indexes of supporting agencies and principal investigators are also included. (BL)
