This final report describes the development of a textbook for advanced, spoken Tamil. There is a marked dirrerence between literary Tamil and spoken Tamil, and training in the former is not sufficient for speaking the language in everyday situations with reasonably educated native speakers. There is difficulty in finding suitable material that illustrates standard colloquial usage. In the textbook described here, the transcriptions of five Tamil radio programs provide the spoken material. The reader consists of the texts of the five radio plays, page-by-page columnar glossaries, exercises, a synopsis grammar, a Tamil-English glossary, and an English-Tamil glossary. Technical and linguistic difficulties are described along with recommendations for future projects. References are listed. (VM)
