Quantitative Analysis of Structure in Teaching.

A method of analyzing the structure of instructors' verbal statements in terms of the pattern of significant verbal elements in the discourse is described and illustrated by reference to transcripts of science lessons. Directions are provided for calculating the fundamental coefficient of structure (a measure of commonality in successive pairs of discourse units) and the weighted coefficient (a similar measure incorporating a factor reflecting the frequency of different verbal elements in the total lesson). There are also examples of "Kinetograms" which enable patterns of discourse to be analyzed graphically. Rules for the coding of transcripts and the interpretation of kinetograms are developed and exemplified in the analysis of six appended lesson transcripts. The instructional advantages of a number of discourse structures are briefly discussed. (AL)
