Probing the Natural World, Volume 3B, What's Up-Well Being-In Orbit.
This book is the second of three experimental editions for use in the ninth grade portion of the Intermediate Science Curriculum Study (ISCS) Program. The volume is divided into three units: "In Orbit,""Well Being," and "What's Up." The unit, "In Orbit," consists of eight chapters of activities related to the properties of sun light, the use of spectrums and spectroscopes, the heat and energy of the sun, the measurement of astronomical distances, and the size of the sun and other similar topics. There are 15 excursion activities provided in this unit. The second unit, "Well Being," is concerned with the student's physical and mental health, including extensive exploration of the effects of drugs, various narcotics, alcohol, and tobacco smoke. There are 12 excursions included with the six chapters of this unit. The final unit consists of 10 chapters of activities dealing with rocketry and moon exploration and includes 21 excursions. The text is student-activity-oriented, and is designed for independent study and self pacing by the student, making it possible for the teacher to work individually with students. The excursions are optional activities providing more depth or side lights to the chapter materials.
