In this booklet, charts and graphs present data from four divisions of the National Center for Health Statistics. The divisions represented are those concerned with vital statistics (births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces); health interview statistics (information on health and demographic factors related to illness); health examination statistics (data on prevalence of illness and on various health-related measures); and health resources statistics (characteristics and utilization of health resources such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and family planning centers.) Infant mortality is recognized as a major problem and is the focus of Part I of the booklet. Part II deals with children's acute conditions and accidents. Part III presents statistics on the impact of illness on children ages 6 to 11 years and includes figures on speech and hearing defects, days of restricted activity and days in bed, school days lost, and reasons for hospitalization. Health care is discussed in Part IV, with statistics given on numbers of visits of children to doctors and dentists. Part V presents data on the growth and development of children ages 6 to 11 years.
