Postwar German Literature: A Critical Introduction.
Demetz, Peter
The development of German writing since World War II in Switzerland, Austria, the German Democratic Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany is discussed. In the first four chapters of this book, social and intellectual transformations that have occurred since 1945 in these four German-speaking countries are described. The literary forms of poetry, drama, and fiction are briefly discussed, with each form further illustrated with critical portraits of important writers. A total of 22 portraits of poets, playwrights, and novelists are presented. The book concludes with a section called Useful Further Readings. (DB)
