The Slavic Active Participles: Original Structure and Interference.
Jacobsson, Gunnar
A revival of interest in the Slavic participles "-nt-" and "-us-," particularly in their development into gerunds, prompts the author to question whether the forms are to be regarded as nominal or verbal forms in their linguistic classification. The historical problem of linguistic interference in the evolution of the Slavic "-nt-" and "-us-" participles with reference to the interference exerted by Greek on Old Church Slavonic is dealt with in this study in the light of far-reaching consequences of such interference in both Church Slavonic and in modern languages, particularly in Russian. Comparative study involving various languages leads the author to conclude that the "-nt-" and "-us-" found so frequently in Old Church Slavonic are adjectives with pronounced verbality inherited from Indo-European and that it is this verbality which makes participles of them. Extensive morphophonemic documentation supports this article. (RL)
