The report describes the current mental retardation activities of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (DHEW). Discussed in the introductory section are the coordination of mental retardation programs and the categories of mental retardation activities of the Department: preventive services, basic and supportive services, training of personnel, research, construction, and income maintenance. The body of the report details the mental retardation activities in these major categories carried out by the following branches of DHEW: Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration, Health Services and Mental Health Administration, National Institutes of Health, Office of Education, Social and Rehabilitation Service, Social Security Administration, and Food and Drug Administration. Appendixes provide additional information on the financial obligations of DHEW for mental retardation programs for fiscal years 1970-72, income maintenance, and the Developmental Disabilities Services and Facilities Construction Act (P.L. 91-517).
