United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Paris (France).
This synopsis of a report prepared by a joint committee of UNESCO and the International Council of Scientific Unions contains 22 recommendations regarding the formation of a World Science Information System (UNISIST). The necessity for, and trends toward, co-operation in information exchange are outlined and the objectives of UNISIST listed. The recommendations are arranged in the following groups: tools of systems intercommunication; effectiveness of information services; responsibilities of professional groups; institutional environment; international assistance to developing countries; and UNISIST management. The implementation of UNISIST is considered, including a list of program priorities. A brief discussion of the benefits to be expected by scientists, research sponsors, managers of information systems, science educators, and developing countries precedes appendices listing members of the committee and working groups.
