This book is designed to help teachers and students of speech, language, English, rhetoric, public address, and speech communication understand the nature of discourse and analyze communicative behavior. Chapters deal with (1) the philosophical bases for the relationships between the speech act and the rhetorical act, (2) the basic concepts of the speech act, (3) the speech act as it relates to human behavior, speaker's intent, materials of utterance, states and conditions of learning, and forms of utterance, (4) rhetorical action, (5) insights into the divisions of rhetoric and the uniqueness of rhetorical action, and (6) the relationship between speech and the concept of a unit of meaningful utterance.
