The first paper in this volume "Self-Study in American Colleges and Universities - A Review," discusses the concept of institutional research and briefly explores the history of institutional research in American higher education. The other papers deal with institutional research and self-studies as functions of different departments and offices of Pennsylvania State University, including the Office of the Vice-President for Planning, the Controller's Office, Personnel Services and Employee Relations, the Department of Management and Engineering, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in Institutional Research, the Department of Planning Studies in Continuing Education, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Center for the Study of Higher Education.
