An Analysis of the Language Growth of Selected Children in a First Grade Title 1 Project.
Siders, Stanford Keith
In this report, an analysis is made of the Title 1 project of the Lorain City Schools in Northern Ohio. The language growth of an experimental group of 30 disadvantaged first graders, who had spent 45 minutes each day in a special language experience classroom, was analyzed using oral language recordings and extensive language tests in order to determine if significant language growth resulted and to determine what specific type of verbal growth could be identified. A second group of 30 disadvantaged first graders acted as a control group and was tested without benefiting from the daily language experiences. Selected tests from the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, the Metropolitan Readiness Tests, the Verbal Identification Tests, and the quantity of sustained verbal participation recorded by the Flanders Analysis of Classroom Interaction provided the raw data for the analysis. Seventeen language and readiness variables were statistically treated in the study. A correlation matrix was developed which contained all readiness, social, and personal variables. The study found that children in the experimental group performed at a level significantly superior to control children in sustained classroom speech, simple fluency, and labeling skills. Results showed that low readiness children can benefit by a compensatory program of language facility. (DD)
