The Social Studies in the Elementary School.
Cornish, Robert L.
One of the main emphases in newer elementary social studies programs has been the derivation of content stressing concepts, generalizations, and ideas from the scholarly disciplines of anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, history, and geography. These are fields which deal with man's social life, behavior, and institutions; if a child can get a better understanding of these fields, then he should be able to grasp the social problems of man--one of the primary reasons for teaching social studies. This guide is organized into chapters based on each of the disciplines. Each chapter contains an introduction, a series of basic concepts, groups of primary and intermediate activites, and student and teacher resources. (SLD)
