Community Service and the Need for a Human Resources Center.
Stanton, Charles M.
Although community colleges have a relatively short period of time to help students learn about society and themselves, the students can gain personal meaning from the concepts and information of course material through related, practical experience. Colleges may, therefore, find it beneficial to incorporate community service experience into the academic program through the coordination of a human resources center. This report offers an in-depth discussion of: (1) the advantages of a community service program; (2) guidelines for a successful program, based on analysis of established programs; (3) difficulties in implementing such a project and suggestions for overcoming them; (4) functions of a human resources center; and (5) suggestions of community agencies to contact for possible participants in service programs.
