Organising Western Spelling into Chinese Tone-Class Patterns.
Jou, Bienming
The author discusses his concept of "tonal spelling" for Chinese. This system spells out the patterns for the tone classes without marking their tone values; the same spelling formation spells out the same tone class and makes tonal orthography a "regular, striking, neat and clean-shaven script." Following a discussion of the principles underlying this system, the author presents five specimens of tonal spelling (for Mandarin or Pekinese, Cantonese or Yudyuu, Amoy or Hokkien, Haenam or Hainanese, and Hinghwa or Putienese) which are "as phonetic and tonetic as the use of phonetic symbols and tone marks, and immensely more practical."
