Potential Dangers in Selected Elementary School Science Activities.
Mann, Charles Alan
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between textbook authors', teachers', and safety specialists' danger potential rankings of selected elementary school science activities. A questionnaire was constructed using twenty-two activities selected from elementary science textbooks which involved potentially dangerous materials or procedures. Textbook authors, randomly selected fourth grade teachers, and safety specialists were asked to rank each activity in one of five categories from "extremely dangerous" to "safe". Rank order correlations and coefficients of correlations were computed. The results showed a high level of agreement between the three groups on the safety ranking of the activities. (EB)
