Life with the Mentally Sick Child.
Lacey, Phyllis R.
Intended as a handbook of guidance and instruction for parents, the book deals with the home and hospital care of psychotic (autistic) children, who are defined as those evidencing psychic withdrawal from reality. Definitions of such a child are presented and symptomatic behavior indicated. Suggestions are made for dealing with symptomatic problems which occur when caring for psychotic children. Discussed are general principles of care of emotionally disturbed children, routine physical care (dressing and undressing, feeding, toilet training, sleeping), and speech, hearing, and communication problems peculiar to psychotic children. Differences between normal and emotionally disturbed children, and between severely emotionally disturbed and psychotic children are explained. Stimulation, occupation, and recreation are also discussed. (KW)
