These three documents outline teaching activities intended to involve children with their environment. Suggested preliminary studies to motivate and familiarize elementary school students with some characteristics of organisms and their physical environment are followed by descriptions of class activities that may be undertaken in the field. Suggestions for classroom analysis of the data at the conclusion of the study are included. Methods of sampling habitats are described; the transect technique is recommended. Simple techniques for measuring physical factors (such as precipitation, light intensity, humidity, wind velocity, and soil composition and characteristics) as well as collection and observation techniques for organisms (plants, soil micro-organisms, invertebrates and vertebrates) are described.
