Working With Aspects of Language.
Alyeshmerni, Mansoor; Taubr, Paul
This workbook is designed to be useful in introductory courses in general language study or English, and is primarily a companion piece of readings and exercises for D. Bolinger's "Aspects of Language" (Harcourt, Brace & World, 1968). Exercises in this volume deal with the biological basis of language; phonology (including distinctive features); morphology; the concept of grammar; traditional, structural, and transformational grammar; sociolinguistics and doctrines of usage; principles of language change and history of English; graphology; and the application of the semantic differential. The principal goal of this manual is to encourage the student to make generalizations about language through his increased awareness of facts about his own language. The few examples in foreign languages are intended only to emphasize the universality of processes involved. No exercise (except the one on Webster's "Third") demands reference sources other than a desk dictionary and the student's native linguistic competence. The instructor's manual for this workbook (a separate volume) provides suggestions for varying the order of the 14 chapters, depending on emphasis in instruction, and grouping the exercises according to topic. It also provides a bibliography of useful sources for each chapter, suggestions for effective use of each exercise, and answers to the exercises. (Author/AMM)
