To facilitate the education of the bilingual child (particularly the Indian or Spanish-speaking one), methods of teaching English as a second language should be applied at all educational levels and in all areas of learning. The bilingual student's academic success is closely related to his ability to understand and to use the dominant language. The ideal situation would be an integrated studies program wherein teachers from all disciplines would work together to assist the bilingual student in language development by preparing vocabulary lists, book lists, and procedural guides. General emphasis would be on teaching in ways which will reinforce and increase language skills while establishing subject matter in the minds of the students. Involving parents and the bilingual community in activities of the school can help the child adjust to the school setting and will reduce cultural interference at home.
