Educational Specifications for the Outdoor School.
Homan, Paul Barringer
The purpose of the study was to develop educational specifications for an outdoor school after determining curricular offerings and recognizing administrative problems. A review of literature provided a basis for the formulation of tentative criteria in the areas of curriculum, administration, site selection, and facilities development. Tentative criteria were presented to a jury of leaders in outdoor education for validation, and 3 times as many jurors were required to agree with a statement as disagreed with it. Specific conclusions were made regarding (1) factors pertinent to development of an outdoor curriculum, (2) administrative problems of the outdoor school, (3) selection of a site, and (4) development of outdoor school facilities. Recommendations included the need for additional studies to determine the effectiveness of outdoor programs, the attitudinal changes caused by outdoor experiences, and the interrelation of outdoor education terms and objectives with the total educational program.
