Health: PROJECT DESIGN. Educational Needs, Fresno, 1968, Number 21.
Lenthall, Betty F.
The future educational needs of the entire school health program in the Fresno City Unified School District are evaluated as part of PROJECT DESIGN, funded under ESEA Title III. This program includes health services, health instruction, and environmental health factors. In the evaluation, site visits were made to selected schools at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels and interviews were held with administrative and instructional personnel and with students of both sexes. The program was found to be generally commendable, the relationship of health to learning and behavior having been well conceived by the district. One area of need is in health counseling. More contact with pupils, parents, and teachers is needed to alleviate health problems before they arise. Also, records from community physicians would be invaluable in dispensing health services. Finally, in health instruction, with yearly changes of emphasis among such subjects as smoking hazards, venereal disease, drugs, family life, and sex education, a separate curriculum unit would be better able to provide systematic treatment of the various subjects. A related document is EA 002 835. (LN)
