An Analysis of Listening Skill Development Using the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction.
Purdom, Boyd Andra
One experimental and three varied control groups (a total of 340 fourth graders) were used to investigate the effectiveness of a listening skill developmental unit produced by the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction (MPATI). Results from an analysis of the effectiveness of the unit in developing skills of listening comprehension, interpretation, and evaluation showed that the experimental group, which received the MPATI unit, made consistently significant gains in all areas of listening skills tested. It was concluded that (1) listening skills can be improved through systematic instruction; (2) the MPATI listening program is effective in improving the listening skills of fourth graders; (3) viewing television "per se" is not an important factor in improving listening ability; and (4) the classroom teacher's knowledge and attitude of listening seems to affect the development of listening ability in pupils.
