An Analysis of Construct Validity of Motivation As It Relates to North Carolina County Agricultural Extension Service Agents.

This study investigated the construct validity of the Herzberg (1964) theory of motivation as it relates to county Extension agents; and developed an inventory to measure the job satisfaction of county agents in North Carolina. The inventory was administered to 419 agents in 79 counties. Factor analysis was used to determine the number of job satisfaction dimensions in a set of 45 items constructed from the Hersberg theory. Nine dimensions were derived: achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, advancement, organizational policy and administration, supervision, salary, and working conditions. An examination of the items with the highest rotated loadings on each factor indicated the dimension to be assigned to the factor. Only items with rotated factor loadings above .500 were included in the final inventory. Eight of the dimensions were rank ordered by percent of total variance. ("The work itself" was never factored out as an independent dimension.) Levels of reliability were as follows: responsibility, .643; organizational policy and administration, .592; working conditions, .542; recognition, .537; advancement, .430; achievement, .380; salary, .276; supervision, .190.
