The School Board Role--Present and Future.
Fine, Jerry
This paper examines the contemporary and future role of the school board in American education. The first part of the paper offers the reader a unique view of the school board's role through the vehicle of a fictional characterization of school board-community relations during a controversy. In the second part of the paper, the author suggests that present school boards are often unable to meet pressing educational needs. This analysis of contemporary difficulties is followed by suggestions for enhancing the planning, problem-solving, and policy making contributions of school boards in the future. The suggestions assume optimum circumstances in the following areas: (1) school board recruitment; (2) superintendent's role; (3) teacher's role; (4) teacher, student, and community participation in the educational program; (5) educational finance; (6) research resources; and (7) school district size.
