A special study was conducted to determine the needs and demands of the public for outdoor recreation. Increasing amounts of leisure time of the American people are being used for outdoor recreation activities. Ways in which education can help people realize optimum benefit from recreational use of the outdoor environment are discussed. Responsibilities of colleges and universities include providing education related to the natural environment, providing professional preparation in the handling of people and resources for outdoor recreation, and training teachers competent to include environmental education in their activities. Twenty-one recommendations are given for strengthening educational activities concerning outdoor recreation at various educational levels. A list of nongovernmental organizations interested in various aspects of outdoor recreations and a bibliography are appended. (JH)
