Defense Language Institute French Basic Course. Volume IV, Lessons 36-45. Volume V, Lessons 46-55.
Defense Language Inst., Washington, DC.
The 20 lessons included in these two volumes are intended for the fifth to the eighth weeks of the intermediate phase of a 68-lesson intensive audiolingual basic French course developed recently by the Defense Language Institute to train native speakers of English to a Level 3 second language proficiency. Designed primarily to enable students to distinguish and use the most essential French structures, these fourth and fifth volumes include such features as the future and present conditional tenses, conditional sentences, various conditional patterns, negative forms, the relative pronouns "qui" and "que," and considerable study of French life and culture. The individual lessons for the six hours of daily classroom work include (1) perception drill on new materials, (2) dialog memorization for instant recall, and (3) reading and pattern drill practice geared to stimulate free conversation. Assignments for three hours of homework daily consist of intensive taped drills on mastered materials, mastery of a certain number of vocabulary items, the study of grammar notes, and written exercises. Every fifth lesson is a review. For other volumes in the series see FL 001 308 and FL 001 310. (AF)
