In an attempt to make poetry interesting to high school students, a teacher tried a "Dramatic Readings Assembly," which was planned, written, and produced by students. Four students were selected to plan the theme and structure of the production, read and research the program material, and write the final script. The plan chosen for the program was to use as narrator a believable character whose reminiscences would reveal to the audience his experiences and feelings as a youth, a soldier, and as a perceptive young man. Both serious and humorous poems were chosen to parallel, not represent, the narrator's words. Lights, music, and dance were used to give emphasis to the poetry, and a minimum of properties and costumes maintained the supremacy of the spoken words of the five actors and the chorus. (JS)
