An Analysis of Curricular Change: The Providence Experience.

The first half of this analysis of the Providence Social Studies Curriculum Project, a program which emphasizes college-school interaction in curricular development, includes discussions of problems and procedures of curricular change, evidences of change since the inception of the project, and background information on city problems which affect the Providence schools. The second half of this report, concerned with the structure of the project, describes categories and functions of the personnel drawn from the Providence School System (a social studies curriculum committee, the project staff, classroom teachers, and school administrators) and Rhode Island College (a social studies curriculum theorist, academic specialists, and a learning theorist) with continuous interaction and communication between them provided by project staff. Also included are a summary of the model used for the project, detailing 10 stages in the process of developing and spreading curriculum materials (with emphasis on the continuous interaction among the categories of persons involved in the process), and observations on the current status of the project.
