This 1968-69 directory of public elementary and secondary schools provides the names and basic information for local school systems operating schools in the United States and its possessions. The main body of the directory lists, in alphabetical order by State, the operating local public school systems with 300 or more pupils, with the following information for each system: Name of unit, superintendent's location, ZIP code, county name, grade span, and enrollment. Also included are (1) summary tables showing the number of operating local public school systems and their distribution by size, grade span, and State; and (2) a listing of the names of the superintendents of the operating public school systems with 10,000 or more pupils. Types of basic administrative units listed include common, city, independent, consolidated, separate elementary or high school, union, community, town, township, jointure, county-unit school districts, and vocational and technical high schools operated by their own governing boards. Nonoperating school systems, intermediate school districts, separate junior college districts, State operated schools, Federally operated schools, and elementary and secondary schools operated by colleges and universities are not included.
