The principles of speech development in the mentally retarded are discussed, and practical suggestions are made for aiding development. Speech improvement is explained, with programs and activities outlined for the educable and teaching suggestions given for the trainable. Sample lesson plans are provided for the trainable level and for the educable on the primary, intermediate, and advanced levels. The bibliography lists 13 professional resources and 44 children's books. An appendix annotates a variety of commercially available instructional materials and lists suggestions for teacher-made materials or activities.
