Report for the First Year of a Project to Provide New Motivation for Reading Through Library Services in Overcrowded Elementary Schools, Title III, Public Law 89-10.

This ESEA Title III library program was designed to motivate the reading of elementary school pupils in the St. Louis, Missouri, schools. Main features of the program included (1) centralized processing of library materials; (2) establishment of a library services center; (3) establishment of libraries in 12 overcrowded elementary schools; (4) employment of library aides; (5) use of volunteers in motivating children to read; (6) application of the "corridor concept" by utilizing hall space for book storage and library displays; and (7) inservice training for library aides and volunteers. Evaluation showing a favorable response was made through the use of questionnaire responses from principals and faculty members of the participating schools and through circulation data.
