Thematic Approach to Literature, Language, and Composition, Grades 7, 8, 9: Junior High School Course Guide.
Cleveland Heights - University Heights City School District, Cleveland Heights, OH.
This presentation of a thematic approach to the teaching of literature, language, and composition in grades 7-9 begins with an overview and rationale for the approach, a general statement of course content, and a discussion of those resources which influenced the formation of the program. The thematic programs in literature for high ability and average students (including lists of recommended texts and annotations of required and supplementary literary works) are presented for each grade. In addition, a separate program designed for slow learners is discussed, and major works to be taught are listed and annotated for each grade level. An extensive appendix includes (1) suggestions for teaching language in correlation with literature and composition, (2) six sample lesson plans, (3) a sequential composition program, grades 7-9, (4) papers and reports pertinent to the English program, and (5) suggestions, by project consultants, on teaching composition and language.
