Presented in this report are the Illuminating Engineering Research Institute's fundamental scientific concepts in a new frame of realism while relating them to an up-to-date accounting of the search for new basic knowledge. In addition to being an annual accounting, it is also intended to provide orientation. Its presented in dramatic and simplified form, and to develop a view into how the march of progress has influenced thinking, action and planning among light and vision scientists. Research projects elaborated on are--(1) visual performance and illumination, (2) roadway visual tasks, (3) color preference studies, (4) glare from large sources, (5) discomfort glare data analysis, (6) transitional adaptation, (7) standardized test objects, and (8) polarization of light.
