LOWER-CLASS NEGRO MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDREN.
BELL, ROBERT R.
REPORTED IS A STUDY OF THE ASPIRATIONS OF 202 NEGRO MOTHERS FOR THEIR CHILDREN'S FUTURE. AN INTERVIEW SCHEDULE WAS ADMINISTERED BY TWO NEGRO WOMEN TO FOUR SUBGROUPS OF LOW AND HIGH STATUS MOTHERS. SUBGROUPS WERE DEFINED ON THE BASIS OF EDUCATION AND NUMBER OF CHILDREN. THE ASPIRATION OF THE RESPONDENTS WERE EXAMINED WITHIN THREE CATEGORIES--(1) EDUCATION AND OCCUPATION, (2) MARRIAGE AND PARENTHOOD, AND (3) "AMERICAN DREAM" VALUES. THE DATA WHICH IS PRESENTED FOCUSES ON DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE LOWEST AND HIGHEST STATUS MOTHERS. OVERALL, THE FINDINGS SUGGESTED THAT EDUCATORS MUST BE AWARE OF THE HETEROGENEITY OF THE LOWER CLASS AND OF THE VARIOUS NONSCHOOL ASPIRATIONAL VALUES THAT INFLUENCE THE CHILDREN OF THIS GROUP. THIS ARTICLE WAS PUBLISHED IN "INTEGRATED EDUCATION," VOLUME 2, NUMBER 6, ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 1964-JANUARY 1965, P. 23-27. (NH)
