THIS FOUR-PART ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE USE OF PROFESSIONAL AND NONPROFESSIONAL PROGRAM AIDES TO TEACH LOW-INCOME HARD-TO-REACH HOMEMAKERS HOW TO PREPARE NUTRITIONALLY BALANCED MEALS USING LOW-COST FOODS. THE PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY THE FEDERAL EXTENSION SERVICE OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. SPECIFICALLY DISCUSSED ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR BECOMING AN AIDE, A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR AIDES, AND A SERIES OF LEAFLETS, "FOOD FOR THRIFTY FAMILIES," TO BE USED BY THE LOW-INCOME HOMEMAKERS. THE FEDERAL FOOD DONATION AND FOOD STAMP PROGRAMS AND AN ALABAMA PILOT PROJECT WHICH USES HOME ECONOMICS AIDES ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
