AN ANALYSIS OF ROLES OF THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN CONTINUING EDUCATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WHICH PROVIDE EDUCATION FOR ADULTS.

THIS STUDY SOUGHT TO SYNTHESIZE THE ROLES OF THE JUNIOR COLLEGE AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS OFFERING CONTINUING EDUCATION. EIGHT CATEGORIES OF EXPERTS AND ADMINISTRATORS (324) WERE ASKED WHICH OF SIX EDUCATIONAL AREAS THEY CONSIDERED MOST IMPORTANT--TRANSFER, VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL, CONTINUING, COMMUNITY SERVICE, GENERAL, AND STUDENT SERVICE. THE 18 CONCLUSIONS FROM THE FINDINGS INCLUDED--(1) TRANSFER AND OCCUPATIONAL COURSES WERE GENERALLY FELT TO BE MOST IMPORTANT, (2) SOME LEADERS GAVE ALL AREAS NEARLY EQUAL PRIORITY, WITH OPINIONS VARYING WITHIN AND AMONG THE GROUPS, (3) COSPONSORED ADULT COURSES WERE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL, (4) ATTENTION TO COMMUNITY SERVICE WAS ON THE INCREASE, AND (5) FEDERAL PARTICIPATION WAS AT A HIGH AND GROWING LEVEL. THE 12 RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDED--(1) COOPERATION BETWEEN THE COLLEGE AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, EMPHASIZING COURSES NOT ALREADY OFFERED AND PREFERRING COSPONSORSHIP TO OVERLAP, (2) A MASTER PLAN WITH PROVISION FOR FULL-TIME FACULTY, (3) PLANS FOR IN-SERVICE TRAINING, COMMUNITY EDUCATION, AND PUBLIC RELATIONS, (4) A COMPREHENSIVE CONSULTING COMMITTEE TO COORDINATE LAY AND PROFESSIONAL EFFORTS, (5) GROWTH OF THE COLLEGE AS A UNIFYING FORCE IN THE COMMUNITY, (6) FURTHER STUDY OF FEDERAL FUNDING, AND (7) EXAMINATION OF THE PERSONALITY AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE PROFESSIONAL LEADER.
