EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION. RESEARCH RESUME NUMBER 37.
GROSS, LYNNE S.
THIS REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE ENDEAVORS TO COVER ALL THE EXPERIMENTAL AND "SEMI-EXPERIMENTAL" RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION. TOPICS REPRESENTED ARE--(1) THE TEACHING ABILITY OF TELEVISION, (2) TELEVISION VERSUS CONVENTIONAL TEACHING, (3) TELEVISION VERSUS OTHER MEDIA, (4) PROGRAM PRODUCTION AND FORMAT, (5) CLASSROOM VARIABLES SUCH AS HOMOGENEITY OF STUDENTS AND CLASSROOM TEACHER EXPERTISE, (6) TEACHER TRAINING, (7) TEACHER AND STUDENT ATTITUDES TOWARD TELEVISION, AND (8) SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES SUCH AS DISCUSSIONS AND TALKBACK. IN ADDITION TO REPORTS ON MANY INDIVIDUAL EXPERIMENTS AND THEIR RESULTS, THERE ARE SUMMARIES OF THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS THAT ARE SIMILAR OR REPLICATORY IN NATURE, AND CITATIONS OF OTHER REVIEWS OF THE LITERATURE. THE WARNING IS GIVEN THAT MANY STUDIES HAVE NOT BEEN CAREFULLY CONTROLLED AND MANIPULATED, SO THAT CONCLUSIONS ARE TENTATIVE AND IN MANY CASES CONTRADICT EACH OTHER. THUS IT IS DIFFICULT TO DRAW ANY OVERALL CONCLUSIONS FROM THE RESEARCH. REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FROM THE CALIFORNIA TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, 1705 MURCHISON DRIVE, BURLINGAME, CALIFORNIA. (JO)
