INTENDED FOR PHYSICIANS, THIS DOCUMENT DESCRIBES THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM OF MILD MENTAL RETARDATION, AND PRESENTS GUIDELINES FOR MEDICAL CARE AND COUNSELING OF MILDLY RETARDED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. TWO GROUPS OF SUCH CHILDREN (BASED ON HIGH OR LOW SOCIOCULTURAL LEVEL) ARE EXAMINED AND CHARACTERIZED. THE TWO GROUPS ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS, INFANCY AND PRESCHOOL YEARS, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEARS, ADOLESCENCE AND ADULTHOOD, AND PSYCHOPATHOLOGY. ETIOLOGY AND PREVENTION ARE CONSIDERED FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF ORGANIC, SOCIOCULTURAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS, AND OF PREVENTION. THE PHYSICIAN'S ROLE IN TREATMENT AND THE LAW REGARDING THE RIGHTS OF THE MENTALLY RETARDED ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. A LIST OF 13 SUGGESTED READINGS IS PROVIDED.
