INNOVATIVE PROGRAM IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL GENERAL MUSIC AND LISTENING IN THE CLASSROOM.

THIS PAPER TRACES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ENRICH JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL GENERAL MUSIC THROUGH A POSITIVE ATTACK ON THE LISTENING HABITS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE PROGRAM, DEVELOPED BY MUSIC TEACHERS AND CONSULTANTS, UTILIZED LIVE ORCHESTRA AND STRING QUARTET PERFORMANCES TO INTENSIFY THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE. THE FOLLOWING GUIDES WERE USED IN DEVELOPING THE PROGRAM--(1) GENERAL MUSIC, BEING GENERAL EDUCATION, MUST BE DESIGNED FOR ALL SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS, (2) THE VEHICLES FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT MUST BE FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE FOR BOTH PERFORMING AND NON-PERFORMING STUDENT, (3) GENERAL MUSIC MUST ALWAYS EMPHASIZE THE NEEDS OF THE POTENTIAL LISTENER, (4) GENERAL MUSIC FOR JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS MUST BE STUDIES IN BREADTH RATHER THAN DEPTH, (5) MUSIC SAMPLED MUST RANGE FROM 1700 TO THE PRESENT, AND (6) THE QUARTET SHOULD USE ORIGINAL WORKS WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
