INSTITUTE FOR EFFECTIVE SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP IN DESEGREGATED SCHOOLS.
Clark Coll., Atlanta, GA.
SOME 40 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS AND TEACHER-COUNSELORS, INTERESTED IN IMPROVING THEIR SKILL AND COMPETENCE IN DEALING WITH DESEGREGATION PROBLEMS, MET FOR A FIVE-WEEK INSTITUTE AT CLARK COLLEGE IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED THESE CLASSROOM AND PRACTICE EXPERIENCES--(1) THREE CLASSROOM COURSES INCLUDING "PSYCHOLOGY AND PROBLEMS OF SCHOOL DESEGREGATION,""SOCIOLOGY AND THE PROBLEMS OF SCHOOL DESEGREGATION," AND "THE DYNAMICS OF RACE RELATIONS," (2) PRACTICE EXPERIENCE CENTERED IN A HUMAN RELATIONS PRACTICUM, T-GROUPS, AND AN AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS LABORATORY. AN EXAMINATION OF THESE ACTIVITIES REVEALS BOTH THEIR STRONG AND WEAK POINTS. THE FOLLOW-UP PHASE, RESULTS, AND CONCLUSIONS OF THE INSTITUTE ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THOSE ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM THAT WERE OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO THE PARTICIPANTS WERE THE T-GROUPS, THE PRACTICUM, AND SPEAKERS BROUGHT IN THROUGHOUT THE COURSE IN THE DYNAMICS OF RACE RELATIONS. (CG)
