TRANSFORMATIONAL GRAMMAR--A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS.
AURBACH, JOSEPH; AND OTHERS
THE AUTHORS HAVE DESIGNED THIS GUIDE FOR NON-LINGUISTICALLY ORIENTED ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHERS WHO ARE FACED WITH THE PROBLEM OF TEACHING "THE NEW GRAMMAR." THE INTRODUCTION PRESENTS A RATIONALE FOR THE TEACHING OF LINGUISTICS IN THE CLASSROOM--"THE NEW GRAMMARS, INTELLIGENTLY APPLIED, MAY HELP CHILDREN NOT ONLY UNDERSTAND THE SYNTAX OF THEIR LANGUAGE BUT USE THAT LANGUAGE AS AN EFFECTIVE TOOL." THE FIRST COMPONENT OF THE TEXT, SYNTAX, CONSTITUTES A SURVEY OF THE MAJOR CONCEPTS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL GRAMMAR AND ILLUSTRATES BY RULES AND TREE DIAGRAMS THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WORDS IN SENTENCES. THE SECOND COMPONENT, MORPHOLOGY, IS PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH THE INFLECTIONAL AND DERIVATIONAL SUFFIXES OF ENGLISH BOUND FORMS, LISTING AND DESCRIBING THEIR OCCURRENCE. PHONOLOGY, THE FINAL COMPONENT, PRESENTS DESCRIPTIONS OF THE VOWELS AND CONSONANTS OF ENGLISH, WITH FACIAL DIAGRAMS ILLUSTRATING THE POINTS AND MANNER OF ARTICULATION. THE BASIC VOCABLARY AND PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTICS ARE EXPLAINED IN AS SIMPLIFIED TERMS AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT SACRIFICING LINGUISTIC ACCURACY. THIS 172-PAGE TEXT IS AVAILABLE FOR $3.50 FROM ENGLISH LANGUAGE SERVICES, DIVISION OF WASHINGTON EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATES, INC., 12216 PARKLAWN DRIVE, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND 20852. (AMM)
